Großglockner Hochalplenstraße
The Großglocker, 3.798 m, is not only the highest Austrian mountain but one of the highest summits of the Alps.
The mountains and their dangerous changeable weather conditions were always regarded with respect and fear, yet men’s boldness is proved by ancient finds in this region. Such finds as pre-Celtic bronze-knives, Celtic gold jewellery, a Roman Hercules statue, medieval bridles and chains from galley slaves from the 17th century are proof for ancient trails which have been crossing the Hochkar for 4000 years. The 17th century saw the height of trade and apart from Brenner pass and Radstädter Tauern, the Hochtor was the third most important trading route, across which about 10% of the entire trading volume of the Eastern Alps were carried out.
